Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, into a family with a long history of business success. His father, Naval Tata, was a successful businessman, and his grandfather, Jamsetji Tata, had founded the Tata Group in the late 19th century.

After completing his education at Cornell University and Harvard Business School in the United States, Ratan Tata began working at the Tata Group in 1962. He started his career on the shop floor of Tata Steel, the group's flagship company, and gradually rose through the ranks.

In 1991, Ratan Tata was appointed as the chairman of the Tata Group, succeeding J.R.D. Tata. Under his leadership, the group expanded into new industries and markets, and became one of the most successful and respected business conglomerates in India and around the world.
