APJ Abdul Kalam was an Indian scientist, academician, and former President of India. He was born on October 15, 1931, in the small town of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. Kalam was the youngest of five children in his family.

Kalam had a difficult childhood as his family was not very wealthy. He sold newspapers to help support his family and often had to do odd jobs to make ends meet. Despite this, Kalam was a good student and excelled in science and mathematics.

In 1954, Kalam graduated with a degree in Physics from St. Joseph's College in Tiruchirappalli. He then went on to study aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology. After completing his studies, he joined the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as a scientist.

Kalam was instrumental in the development of India's first indigenous satellite launch vehicle (SLV-III). He was also responsible for the successful test firing of the Agni and Prithvi missiles. For his contributions to Indian science and technology, Kalam was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, two of India's highest civilian awards.

In 2002, Kalam was elected as the President of India. During his tenure as President, he continued to advocate for science and technology education, particularly for young people in India. He also traveled extensively, meeting with world leaders and promoting India's interests on the global stage.

Kalam was a popular President and was known for his humility, simplicity, and kindness. He was affectionately known as the "People's President." After his term as President ended in 2007, Kalam continued to work as a teacher and mentor to young people.


In 2015, Kalam suffered a heart attack and died while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. He was 83 years old. Kalam's legacy as a scientist, teacher, and statesman continues to inspire people around the world, particularly in India.
